MMMULM Multi – Use Lime Mortar

1.Product description

MMMULM a ready mixed mortar at a price point that allows ready mix to be competitively specified against site mixed mortars alleviating all the potential issues and inaccuracies that site mixing can bring. Product designation MMMULM F or C

2.General application and uses

MMMULM is suitable for building and pointing masonry, natural stone or brick and as a base coat and finish for flat floated or textured traditional lime render. It is a factory produced accurately proportioned mortar that can be mixed on site with water to make a consistent, reliable mortar every time. Good vapour permeability, adequate strength for mass masonry wall construction. MMMULM can be used for the conservation, restoration and repair of all traditionally constructed mass masonry walls and is suitable for use on most modern masonry backgrounds.

3.Material Properties

See typical Mortar Performance chart for physical properties for the range of Masons Mortar ready mixed Lime mortars.

4.Application instructions

Ambient and materials / surface temperature range to be within 50C – 300C – outwith these ranges consult our technical department. Use control methods to maintain ambient conditions until mortar is sufficiently cured

5.Building, Pointing joint / background preparation

  • Remove, cut out defective mortar.
  • Clean away all loose and friable materials, remove dust, dampen retained, old mortar and masonry to control suction
  • Dense impervious masonry, dampen old mortar, no standing water on masonry, remove with air or dry sponge / cloth or brush.
  • All construction materials should be stored clean, and dry, off the ground or on tarpaulins to prevent contamination from potential salt bearing soils and water
  • All backgrounds must be free of salts, dust, loose or friable materials
  • Power wash, if required, to remove soiling or vegetation at joint interface, avoid staining high suction masonry by pre-wetting before cleaning out joints. Use biocide treatments as required
  • Backgrounds to be rendered should be clean, stable and re-pointed prior to the application of MMMULM Type C as a render base coat
  • Never work with frozen or saturated masonry or masonry backgrounds.

6.Application Repointing

  • Apply an initial layer up to 30mm with some pressure to the background, ensuring mortar is pressed into mortar. Fill beds then perps, placing mortar on mortar.
  • Generally up to 30mm can be applied in a single lift, however it is always best to divide up deep joints – 40mm or more into 2 or more lifts
  • Allow at least 12 hours between each application, work out gradually towards the face. Stone should be weathered edge or fully flush pointed.  Brickwork, filled and finished according to design requirements or to match the existing.

7.Masonry construction

  • Dampen masonry units to control suction if required, masonry units should be stored on free draining clean boards or tarpaulins and covered when not in use
  • For recovered masonry, work only with cleaned, lichen and moss free units and ensure all old mortar remnants are removed.
  • Bonding and laying of masonry units with minimum amount of mortar required to avoid unit to unit contact is advised, use pinning / gallets for natural stone masonry, correct gauge/ coursing for brick work, prevent low density concrete blocks from saturation before and after construction

8.Rendering

  • MMMULM Type C (well graded sharp concrete sand) can be used as a base coat material for traditional lime render on mass masonry walls, suitable for all natural stone masonry and fired clay masonry.
  • Spray, cast or trowel onto a well prepared background and allow a minimum of 1 full day of curing per mm of thickness before applying further coats.
  • Flat finished work can be achieved with MMMULM type C or F by closing in with a wood or plastic float once the initial stiffening set has begun. Do not overwork, avoid overworking and bringing laitance to the finish.
  • Textured or harled finishes are best carried out with MMMULM type C and will produce a tight 5mm average grain size finish, do not alter the mix with addition of chips or additional binders
  • Cast or Sprayed, ensure the work is covered and protected against drying winds and rain or frost until properly cured.

9.Mixing

  • Allow Approx*4-5 litres of clean potable water per bag depending on use. *Water content is a function of use and should be adjusted by the applicator to suit the conditions and operation being carried out.
  • For small quantities use hand held drill or whisk type mixer. Mix dry powder into water gradually, start wet, work to drier consistency For larger mixes use pan or free fall mixers.
  • Do not short mix, short mixing requires greater water content and will lead to bleed or shrinkage. Over mixing can result in weaker mortar. Mix for 2-3 minutes with drill and paddle mixers and for 4-5 minutes for free fall mixers mix 8-10minutes by hand. Use all mortar within 4 hours of mixing, re-temper as necessary.

10.Finishing

  • Finish with appropriate tools as the mortar takes its initial set, 6-18 hours depending on mortar designation and ambient conditions.
  • Tamping back the surface of the joint with a stiff bristle brush, scraping the joint to open the surface, tooling the joint or lining out all require consistent placing, mixing, finishing, protection and curing.

11.Consumption

  • 1 x 25KG bag of Masons Mortar MMMULM F or C will build approx 50 standard metric bricks with 10mm joints or Re-point 7.5 M 2 at 10mm x 10mm
  • 1 x 25KG bag of Masons Mortar MMMULM and will cover 1.5M2 of render at 10MM thick and 3.5-4M2 of sprayed harl finish

12.Clean up

  • Wash tools with clean water immediately after use

13.Colour

MMMULM is made with naturally occurring sands and there may be slight variations in the mortar due to variations in the natural colour of the sands. Generally this will not be noticeable for mortar joints and it is assumed that when the mortar is used as a render it will be lime washed on completion to achieve the finished colour. For absolute consistency, the purchaser should advise MM Ltd that they require a single batch from one sand source and that all the mortar for the whole project is ordered at the same time.
