MM FHLP + FIBRES – FEEBLY HYDRAULIC LIME PLASTER USER & DATA GUIDE
- Product description
Mineral dry bagged plastering mortar based on Hydraulic Lime binders and aggregates (Product designation MMFHLP Base or finish with or without fibres or hair)
- General application and uses
Masons Mortar Dry Bagged Ready to Mix is especially suitable for plastering masonry, natural stone and brick or on timber lath. With excellent vapour permeability, adequate strength with excellent bond characteristics, low shrinkage and high tensile strength from the inclusion of fibres or animal hair. It can be used for the conservation, restoration and repair of traditionally plastered mass masonry walls of masonry or clay or on lathed walls or ceilings.
- Material Properties
See typical Mortar Performance chart for physical properties for the range of Masons Mortar ready mixed Lime mortars
- Application instructions
Ambient and materials / surface temperature range to be within 50C – 300C – out with these ranges consult our technical department. Use control methods to maintain ambient conditions until mortar is sufficiently cured
Background preparation
- Remove, cut out and repair defective mortar or masonry, repair defective timbers and laths.
- Clean away all loose and friable materials, remove dust, dampen retained, old mortar and masonry to control suction
- Dense impervious masonry, dampen old mortar, no standing water on masonry, remove with air or dry sponge / cloth or brush.
- All backgrounds must be free of salts, dust, loose or friable materials
- Gaps between laths should be approximately 8-10mm and for riven lath will vary according to the lath shape and thickness and species. Lath must be break and but bonded, sawn lath should be break and but bonded, diagonal on ceilings in a herring bone pattern is best for sawn lath
- Dampen masonry units to control suction if required – a pricking up coat / spatter dash coat may be required on very high suction backgrounds. Ensure laths are damp before application – no standing water on any background
- Do not over work surface of mortar on lath work, ensure consistent rivet formation
- Mixing
- For small quantities use hand held drill or whisk type mixer. Mix dry powder into water gradually, start wet, work to drier consistency For larger mixes pan mixers, paddle mixers are best,. Do not short mix, short mixing requires greater water content and will lead to bleed or shrinkage. Over mixing can result in weaker mortar. Mix for 3-4 minutes with drill and whisk mixers and for 5-6 minutes for pans and paddle mixers. For free fall mixers mix 8-10minutes. If hand mixing, mix only small amounts and ensure the materials are properly mixed, usually around 4-5 minutes of vigorous mixing. Use only pan or paddle mixers for animal hair plasters, for all other fibres, all mixer types are suitable
- Application Guidelines – General
- Ensure mortar is compatible with other mortars – see technical performance data before using in multiple layer work with site mixed or other manufacturers products. If in doubt seek advice.
- Apply to properly prepared backgrounds
- Apply in accordance with general site specifications
- Allow adequate curing times between applications
- Consumption
- 1 25 KG Bag of Masons Mortar Ltd Dry Bagged Ready To Mix mortar will cover 1.5 M2 at 10mm thick
- 8 tonnes or Masons Mortar Ltd Dry Bagged Ready To Mix mortar will cover 110 M2 at 10mm thick
- Clean up
- Wash tools with clean water immediately after use
- Colour matched or colour packs
- As supplied, either through coloured or with colour pack for onsite mixing, our finishing plaster can be through coloured for decorative finishing.
- Through coloured dry bagged product, take materials as required and mix with water, colour will remain consistent throughout the depth of the material
- Colour packs are supplied for mixing with full bags of MMLP finishing plaster only (Note finishing plaster is fibre free)
- Empty the colour pack into mortar which has already been mixed to a stiffer than normally usable consistency, turn package inside out and clean off any residual pigments into the wet mix, dispose of colour packaging thoughtfully
- Proper protection must be maintained throughout the curing process, colour variation will occur if differential hydration takes place. After placing keep work protected from strong sunlight through windows, drying draughts through open doors, and if required lightly mist, just to a glistening surface condition, not wet for the first 24 hours.
